The Bestman

THE BEST MANS ROLE in the Wedding

The best man is the groom's right hand man throughout the wedding planning and during the wedding day. In addition to taking care of details (big and small) the best man provides moral support to the groom during this exciting, yet stressful time. Often working with the maid of honour the best man's duties are intended to make the wedding as enjoyable as possible for the couple. Choosing Your Best Man Like choosing the maid of honour, choosing your best man is a personal, often difficult decision. Of the best man's responsibilities and the most important is to provide moral support to the groom throughout the wedding planning process and in particular on the wedding day itself. Given the best man's prominence in the wedding party, the groom (and the bride) should think carefully about selecting the "best man for the job". For this reason the groom should consider someone he feels comfortable with, can easily communicate with and most importantly trust completely. There are other factors you should cons ider when choosing the best man:

  1. It doesn't have to be family: Don't feel obligated to choose a family member as your best man. Instead, choose someone that is very important in your life and can offer you loyalty and support on your wedding day. More often than not, a brother or cousin happens to fit the bill.

  2. Distance does matter: if the best man lives thousands of miles away, it will difficult for him to communicate and participate in wedding planning and other pre-wedding events (engagement party) or stag party. If a lot of extra help is required a local best man may be a better choice.

  3. Consider the best man's past and future: consider your best man's past behaviour. If he's always been there for you when you needed him he'll likely make a trustworthy best man. Also, consider his future. Does he have a child on the way? Is he going through a divorce? If so, he may not be able to give his full attention and efforts to your wedding.

    Wedding Planning Duties:

  • Attend any appointments to get measured and rent suit
  • Organise the stag party
  • Attend rehearsal
  • Buy the couple a wedding gift

    Wedding Day Duties:

  • Help bring any necessary decorations or equipment to the reception venue
  • Help the groom get dressed
  • Help get the groom and groomsmen to the ceremony on time
  • Drive the groom to the wedding ceremony if necessary
  • Hold the brides's ring until the exchange of rings
  • Witness the signing of the marriage license
  • Give the wedding officiant and vendors their payment envelope
  • Participate in the wedding photos
  • Stand in the receiving line
  • Give the best man's speech an toast
  • Dance the first dance with the maid of honour
  • Deliver any wedding gifts to bride's or groom's parents' house
  • Help return the groom's suit to the formalwear rental store the day after the wedding
  • Anything the groom requires, within reason

The most important of the best man's duties is to simply "be there" for the groom. More often than not, the groom just needs a second opinion or a sympathetic ear. While the wedding tends to focus on the bride and her duties the groom can also get stressed or worried about the wedding. Just having a shoulder to lean on can go a long way in keeping him calm and relaxed.
